Guide To The Ce Marking Of Structural Steelwork

For the most comprehensive guide to the CE Marking of Structural Steelwork, click here.

This document gives guidance on the CE marking of structural steelwork. It applies to structural steel components that are manufactured as welded or non-welded fabrications. The components may be CE Marked individually or collectively as a kit.

The general guidance applies to structural steel components to be used in building construction. It can also be applied, with some modification, to components to be used in other construction applications including bridges.

Advance Steel Breaks Free Of Autocad

The 2012 release of Advance Steel, the modelling and detailing system from Graitec, is able to run with or without AutoCAD for the first time, with full interoperability between both platforms.

Key enhancements include: the addition of more automatic connections; the option to group and control similar connections globally; the introduction of preliminary reference marks to better control, manage and trace elementsfrom creation through to manufacturing. The forth of the five Target Zero guides, covering medium to high rise office buildings, has been published and is available for download in pdf format at www.targetinfo.info. Ce Marking And Its Implementation

Mandatory CE marking comes into force in the UK on 1st July 2014; at this point all fabricated structural steelwork has to be CE marked.
In the mean time, voluntary CE marking of fabricated steelwork started on the 1st January 2011.
Because we are considered a fabricator for CE marking purposes we will haveto install a FPC system (Factory Production control system). This is similar to the original requirements of ISO 9001. This is not an issue for us and we will begin the process of installing this system in the not to distant future.
All steel we have purchased for some while now is CE marked, as we only purchase material from mills that are CE compliant.
Steel is not actually CE marked’ as other materials and products’ are, but it is the documentation (test certificate) and the process system that any processing work carried out is approved to (FPC Factory Production Control System), that means that the material is deemed to be CE marked. The FPC will cover such processes as Cutting, Drilling and Coping / Notching.

Timber Frames In Fire

The use of timber frames in construction has come under a great deal of scrutiny in recent years as a series of high profile fires have caused significant damage. Many of the fires have been caught on video and are available on the Internet. They have also been widely reported in the construction press and on the television.

On 17th December, the BBC carried a story at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-12013133 which summarises the publication of a London Assembly report which includes the phrase: There is a crisis of confidence about the safety of tall and timber-framed buildings, and the government and construction industry must act now to tighten regulations and reduce fire risk.

Steel Costs Beat Concrete!

The cost gap between steel and concrete as framing materials is bigger thanit has ever been, according to the latest independent Cost Comparison study. Steel frames have consistently been proven to be faster to build andmore cost effective than reinforced concrete alternatives. The cost differential between the average steel and concrete options is actually wider now than it was in 1995 when the steel options were £12.10/m² cheaper they are now £47.55/m² cheaper. The latest survey, using second quarter 2010 figures, shows the concrete frame and floor options cost an average of £160.36/m² compared to the average steel cost ofonly £112.81/m². The study considers a number of steel and concrete framing options for two typical office buildings. The design, programming and costs are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect modern practice by a team including Davis Langdon, Arup and MACE. The detailed results are available at www.steelconstruction.org/compare

Timber Vs Steel, Which Is Greener?

There is a general perception that timber is the most sustainable construction material, and as such clients are beginning to seriously consider it as an alternative to steel in a number of areas of construction.

An investigation has been carried out by Corus into the claims made by the timber industry. This has established a number of facts, which can be used to counter claims in favour of wood over steel in construction.

These facts are listed in the attached report and can be used in situationswhere a timber frame is potentially being favoured over a steel equivalent.
